When Mike Richards came to us to build his roadster he had a specific look in mind. That look recalled the post-war era when the Founding Fathers of Hot Rodding were tearing up the Dry Lakes at El Mirage. An era when veterans, turned gearhead, were creating roadsters out of drop-tanks, and applying mechanical skills learned on Sherman tanks to the task of turning recycled junk yard Fords into time-setting record breakers. Cars which, years later, would rise phoenix like yet again as a new generation of rodders tried to one-up their fathers. So, when this roadster blasts by you like it's on a strafing run, looking like it should have wings, it's no accident.

Mikes inspiration came from a "really nice" flathead powered track roadster he had seen several years before. He really liked that car, but figured that he would want one that had some weather protection if the need arose. He also wanted to use a Y-block motor for which he had the major pieces. The Y-block, he felt had been overlooked by hot rodders after its successfull 1957 Stock Car season against the fuel-injected GM competition. These requirements he said, "...led me to Dearborn Deuce and to Hot Rods & Custom Stuff." Mike also wanted the car low to the ground which meant a channeled car rather than a high boy, and use of the Y-block dictated to him that the roadster had a "traditional" look. Originally he had intended to use an early McCullogh supercharger, but when he got his hands on a VR-57 Ford/McCullogh unit he decided to go with that

• The engine is a 1956 Ford 312 Y-Block bored to 3.86” (.060” over). • The crank is the 312, offset ground to 3.64”, for 2” rod bearings. • The displacement is 340 cu. in. • The custom rods are clearanced for cam clearance. ARP studs are used in the mains and heads, and ARP bolts in the rods. • The pistons are milled flat, giving it an 8.4 :1 compression ratio. • Heads are posted 471 castings, ported by John Mummert for supercharged applications. • The cam is a Y-284S, with a duration of 284”, with 1.54 ratio rockers. • The VR-57 Ford/McCullogh supercharger was rebuilt by Pat Fleischman, and the brackets, pulleys, bonnet front cover and water pump by Frank Rice of Rebop Castings. • The supercharger is set up for 7lbs boost at 5000rpm. • Custom machine work (bore alignment, over bore, decking, piston milling, head cc’ed, etc.), was accomplished by Cal Stewart at Stewart Machine in Renton, WA.
