Skin Deep...
They say beauty is only skin deep. In this case is was paint
deep. Just imagine how much filler it took to cover all that up. We need
some crackers to go with all this Swiss cheese...
Talk about cutting to the bone! The bodyshop says there may
be some good sheetmetal left on the roof...
If you haven't figured it out by now, we are going to be replacing
lots of sheetmetal. Some of it can be repaired, but these days it is often
cheaper to replace damaged sections with after-market panels when available.
Fortunately companies like Dynacorn International, Inc. and Original Equipment
Reproduction (OER) can provide just about everything you need. Most of the
replacement external sheetmetal for this project was ordered from Dynacorn,
while most of the interior stuff and mechanical parts came from OER.
In most cases only a few replacement panels are used in a
project. This one will use just about everything in the Dynacorn catalog.
The trick is graft everything together properly so that it all fits together
like the originals did. This is not nearly as easy as it sounds (even if
you do have every type of vise-grip ever made).
The entire floor, including the trunk has to be replaced
The body itself becomes the jig as sections are replaced one
at a time. Here's a list of some of the body parts replaced: inner and outer
fenders (front and rear), passenger compartment and trunk floors, trunk
lid, hood, rear seat mount panel, both rocker panels, grill, rear valence
panel, dash panel, transmission crossmember, and much more.
