Oldsmobile is the oldest continuing car marque in the United
State (it predates Ford by 6 years). The Olds Motor Co. was incorporated
in 1897 with an initial capital investment of only $50,000.00 That year
the company produced only 4 cars.
The full name "Oldsmobile" was first used in 1900.
Prior to that, they were known referred to as "Olds", built by
the Olds Motor Works of Lansing. Sadly, the Oldsmobile division of GM shut
down in 2003.
This Beauty is a 1961 "Dynamic 88".
"Sized right ... powered right ... priced right ...
Super 88 - the action line ... in performance and design!" - 1961
Oldsmobile ad slogan.
Just look at those lines! From the days when body design was
still an art, not just a techinical excercise.
You have to love grills with teeth. Anything else just seems
In 1949 the Oldsmobile company unveiled its "Rocket"
series of V8 motors. They made a big splash, and in 1950's the Rocket 88
equipped olds won 8 out 10 NASCAR races (with automatic transmissions, no
less). From 1961 to 1963 Oldsmobiles came equipped with the 394ci, "Sky
Rocket" motor. You can see the trademark "Rocket 88" emblem
here on the trunk.
That silver flake reminds one of stars in the night sky. Fitting
for a "Rocket 88".
