Grand Canyon Airlines 1939 Pontiac Woodie Project

Scenic Airways brochure. Grand Canyon Airlines flyer.

Grand Canyon Airlines is one of the oldest air tour companies in the United States, having been in continuous operation since 1927 when it began life as Scenic Airways.

The airline is credited with offering the first commercial air tours of the Grand Canyon, Rainbow Natural Bridge, Monument Valley and other natural wonders of the desert southwest.

In addition to operating a historic Ford Tri-Motor, Grand Canyon Airlines owns some other classics, including a 1939 Pontiac Woodie that used to ferry passengers to and from the aircraft and elsewhere. The 39 Pontiac Woodie pictured here did ground transport duty for the airline for many years until it sold sometime in the 50's. For years no one knew what happened to it. Then, a couple of years ago, the question arose, "whatever happened to that old woodie we used to have?"

That was enough. The search was on and eventually the woodie was located in garage where it had been stored for years. Back in the hands of its original owners the search was now on for a restoration shop, and that's where we come into the picture. It's our job to bring the woodie back to life and its rightful place at Grand Canyon Airlines.
