Filling and sanding are required to remove all of the surface
imperfections that might detract from later applications of paint. While
filler is used in the process, it is only applied in thin coats and not
allowed to build up too much. At the end of the process, the filler material
that covers the metal will be about the thickness of several coats of primer
and glass smooth to the touch.
Finally, one last coatof primer is applied before heading
to the paint shop.
